Cristian Romero ‘set to leave Tottenham’ amid ‘extreme’ Deadline Day development
Cristian Romero looks as though he might be on his way out of Tottenham.
Ange Postecoglou has been without the World Cup-winning centre-back due to injury in recent weeks, and it doesn’t appear as though the 26-year-old is any closer to making a return.
Therefore, Romero’s remaining Spurs appearances might now be limited, with a summer exit on the cards after Ed Aarons reported via X (3 February) that Spurs had made an offer worth up to £70million for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guéhi.
And Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – agrees that Romero’s days in North London could now be numbered.
“If Tottenham did offer up to £70m for Guéhi, that is an extreme amount of money,” Wenham said.
“It would probably make him one of the most expensive defenders of all time. Therefore, that tells me the club are planning for the departure of Romero, especially as no progress has been made on extending his contract.
“I do think we have to consider that as a real reality now. I like Guéhi, I think he is a good defender. However, is he worth £70m, that I’m not so sure of?”
Cristian Romero to leave Tottenham?
Losing Romero would be a blow to Spurs and Postecoglou. However, that is not to say that the centre-back cannot be replaced.
Therefore, if Daniel Levy and Tottenham are already planning ahead and identifying potential replacements, that is at least a positive sign.
Romero is a top defender with plenty of experience. However, he certainly isn’t perfect and has been guilty of making a lot of mistakes this season when he has played.

As a result, he is a player that the club could perhaps afford to lose.
