Cristian Romero injury: Bad news keeps coming for Tottenham as relegation now more likely
Cristian Romero will miss the rest of the season as Tottenham Hotspur edge closer to a shocking Premier League relegation.
Roberto De Zerbi was appointed as the new Spurs manager on a long-term contract over the international break, but little has changed at Hotspur Way.
The Italian lost his first game in charge on Sunday, falling to a 1-0 defeat at the Stadium of Light against Sunderland, but that wasn’t the worst of it.
Romero was forced off injured, crying as he left the pitch after a collision with Antonin Kinsky was forced by Brian Brobbey push off the ball.
Keith Wyness has been left shocked by the injury news from Tottenham, saying the hole is only getting bigger for the Lilywhites and De Zerbi.

Tottenham destined for relegation after Cristian Romero blow
Wyness believes that Romero’s absence for the rest of the season will take away the passion and aggression needed in a relegation fight, admitting it makes survival even harder.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, the ex-Aston Villa and Everton chief executive couldn’t believe the bad news that keeps coming out of Hotspur Way.
| Cristian Romero vs Sunderland | Statistic |
| Touches | 47 |
| Pass accuracy | 91% |
| Tackles | 3 |
| Clearances | 4 |
| Interceptions | 2 |
| Recoveries | 3 |
| Ground duels won | 5/8 (62%) |
| Aerial duels won | 3/3 (100%) |
“Well, when that news came through, I thought, blimey, mean, bad luck just seems to keep coming, doesn’t it, when you’re down the bottom?” Wyness said.
“And this was pretty crucial for Spurs.
“I mean, of all the characters who I’ve just talked about having bite and aggression, he’s the one that would have had it, and perhaps led by example to a degree.
“He’d have had to be careful with the red cards he’s had, but still, he is that type of passionate player that I wanted to see in the relegation battle.

“And unfortunately, he’s out now for the season.
“It’s a big blow for De Zerbi because that’s the sort of, you know, experienced type of player that he was going to have to rely on.
“And he was a big part of it, I’m sure, going forward. So it’s another blow to Spurs, certainly, and it’s very hard to see them getting out of this hole right now.”
Cristian Romero may never play for Tottenham again
With links to Real Madrid in the summer, it is hard to imagine Romero in a Spurs shirt again.
His contract has been revealed to have a release clause included, too, so with relegation possibly on top of that, it’s almost impossible that he remains.

Romero is part of this downfall, but the sad reality of football is that the players who let you down rarely have to stick around and face the consequences.
