Cristian Romero ‘in talks with his agent’ amid Tottenham transfer news

Cristian Romero’s future at Tottenham is uncertain, and it looks as though some of that uncertainty might be coming from the player himself.

It hasn’t been Romero’s finest season in a Spurs shirt.

The centre-back has spent much of the season sidelined with injury, which led to him recently aiming a subtle dig at the Tottenham medical team.

As a result, it has been mooted that some tension might exist behind the scenes between Romero and the Spurs staff.

This will only add to the feeling that the 26-year-old could move on from Tottenham this summer, a feeling which has been emphasised by recent transfer speculation.

Romero ‘in talks with his agent’ amid Atletico Madrid news

Tottenham could offer Romero £200,000-a-week to tie him to a new contract in North London.

The defender will have two years left on his deal in the summer, and Spurs are willing to cut ties with the Argentinian if he doesn’t put pen to paper on a new deal [GiveMeSport].

One of Romero’s potential destinations is Atletico Madrid. However, ex-Spurs scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – has suggested that some of this noise might be coming from within the player’s camp.

“I think Atletico Madrid could afford Romero,” King said.

“However, the question that I want to ask is, why is it that when Romero heads to South America for international duty, these stories emerge? Perhaps he is talking to his agent and ensuring that stories are being let out that other clubs are interested in him.

“Of course, other clubs are interested, especially Spanish-speaking clubs. Is Romero using the Atletico Madrid news to get Real Madrid interested, and if Real are interested, would Barcelona be interested?

“That would mean you have three big clubs interested in a World Cup winner playing for Tottenham.”

Tottenham could be forced to cash in on Romero

If Romero doesn’t sign a new contract this summer, Tottenham will have no choice but to sell him.

The club cannot afford for such a valuable asset to run into the final year of his deal. Therefore, it appears as though Romero’s future will be decided one way or another before next season.
