Cristian Romero ‘exit stance changes’ amid Tottenham developments

Cristian Romero’s future is one of many talking points at Tottenham this summer.

Romero has become a fan favourite at Tottenham since joining the Lilywhites in 2021.

The defender was named Player of the Match in the UEFA Europa League final. However, question marks surround his future amid interest from Atletico Madrid.

And Romero’s future at Tottenham appears to have become less clear after a recent claim.

Romero is now ‘far more likely’ to stay at Tottenham this summer

Tottenham are gearing up for a big summer, and the North London club will be looking to use their Europa League victory as a springboard for future sporting success.

The future of Ange Postecoglou, recruitment plans, and the futures of those playing at the club will all be high priorities for Spurs over the next couple of weeks.

Romero is arguably Spurs’ most important defender, and his potential departure is something Daniel Levy would have preferred not to be an issue this summer.

However, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes Levy might not need to worry anymore.

“It was reported that Atletico Madrid want to open talks,” Wenham said.

“However, reports in Spain also suggest Atletico baulked at Spurs’ valuation of Romero, and it has been suggested that while contract talks aren’t imminent, Levy will do what he can to keep the defender.

“Therefore, I think since the Europa League win, there has been a change from Romero’s departure being seen as inevitable, to now there being a real prospect of him remaining at Tottenham.

“I certainly think it is far more likely that Romero stays now. I just don’t see Atletico reaching a valuation which I think is perfectly reasonable for a player who put in a phenomenal performance in the Europa League final.”

Tottenham need to convince Romero to sign a new deal

While keeping hold of Romero would no doubt be a boost, the centre-back has just two years left on his contract in North London.

Therefore, if he is to remain this summer, Spurs need him to sign a new deal. Otherwise, they run the serious risk of losing one of their most important players on a free transfer later down the line.
