Cristian Romero ‘exit sealed’ amid Tottenham PSR concern – Exclusive

Tottenham may already be preparing for life without Cristian Romero.

This summer will arguably be the most important one at Tottenham for years, given the number of decisions they will have to make.

The future of Ange Postecoglou, recruitment plans, as well as the future of those currently playing their trade in North London, will all be among the list of things that Spurs need to address.

With that in mind, the future of Romero is looking incredibly dull, and Tottenham’s PSR situation could be the reason behind his impending exit.

Tottenham to offload Romero to adhere to PSR

After winning the Europa League and subsequently qualifying for the Champions League, many thought that the summer plans would become much easier in North London, though that may not be the case.

Despite the added windfall from their achievement, Spurs will still need to adhere to PSR rules in the Premier League, and with Romero linked with a move to Atletico Madrid, Paul Robinson thinks that Tottenham will sanction his exit.

Speaking to Tottenham News, he said: “With a player, you come to the end of the season and the rumour mill starts and there’s no smoke without fire. That rumour has been gathering pace since January.

Romero missed much of the campaign through injury.

“I think, yes, Tottenham do have the lure of Champions League football now, but they’ve still also got to toe the line of FFP and PSR. You look at Newcastle, you look at Nottingham Forest, you look at the way that they’ve had points deducted, and Tottenham will be in the same boat. They can’t just go and blow all that Champions League money because of the FFP and PSR.

“We don’t know how often Tottenham post their results of FFP and PSR and how close they are to toeing the line, but they have spent a fair bit of money, and if they’re to go in again, Romero might be one that they’ll let go.

“I don’t imagine Cristian Romero to be there at the start of next season. I think when the deal’s been mooted for that long and it’s gathering pace and it’s a club like Atletico Madrid, for him, I think that would have enough pull.”

Postecoglou decision needs to be made now

If Tottenham are going to sack Postecoglou, that needs to happen now, or else their recruitment plans will suffer as a result.

Players will be put off at the idea of making a move to North London as long as there is an air of uncertainty over his future.

Spurs have no time to waste this summer, and as it stands, they are already throwing some of that away.
