Chelsea tipped to receive ‘cheeky bid’ for Tottenham-linked ace Conor Gallagher before June 30

Tottenham-linked Chelsea ace Conor Gallagher could be the subject of a “cheeky bid” before the end of June, Paul Robinson has said.

It was reported by TeamTalk (25 March) that Spurs are preparing a bid in the region of £30-40million, although the same publication wrote on 18 February that Chelsea had previously set a £50m asking price.

England midfielder Gallagher, 24, has been a mainstay under Mauricio Pochettino but has been consistently linked with a Stamford Bridge exit as Chelsea battle to stay within Profit and Sustainability parameters.

The Daily Mail reported on 20 March that Chelsea, Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest and Leicester City are among the clubs who might have to make a sale before June 30 in order to comply.

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Robinson thinks Gallagher would be a great fit at Tottenham and thinks a few clubs will be interested in making a move if Chelsea face a position whereby they have to sell.

He exclusively told Tottenham News: “I think the fact that the rumour is not going away and it’s growing legs as the weeks go by, I think from a Chelsea point of view I think a lot of Chelsea fans would be disappointed to lose him but I think a lot would be pragmatic and realise the situation the club’s in, it’s an easy way to recoup money isn’t it?

“I mean with FFP, the laws, selling one of your homegrown players, I still find it very hard to believe that they’d be happy to do business with Tottenham and if Conor Gallagher is available at the prices that have been touted about for Conor Gallagher I don’t think Tottenham will be the only ones at the table for him because I think his application and attitude in a Chelsea shirt this season, at times when Chelsea have struggled, he’s stood out quality wise. The level he’s at there’s more to come from him there’s another level for him to get to.

“From a Chelsea point of view if he’s fit he plays so that does leave a hole. You look at that Chelsea squad and Trevor Chalobah and others who could be sold instead of Conor Gallagher, there’s an argument to say you’ll raise those funds elsewhere, and is Conor Gallagher at £50million a good price for other clubs?

“If it’s a price tag like that I wouldn’t be surprised if clubs come with a cheeky bid early on, it’s June 30th I think it is before the books have to be sent in for the FFP, so before that deadline I wouldn’t be surprised if a couple test Chelsea with a cheeky bid for Conor Gallagher.

“As far as Tottenham go, I’d love to see him come into the squad because he is a play who would improve the starting XI, would improve the squad, and with the way that Ange plays then next season the squad is thin in those areas.

“He could play as a holding midfielder alongside Bentancur, Bissouma or Sarr, he can play higher up the field, he can affect games up the field, and hopefully with Champions League football next season, the number of games that they’re going to have that could just draw him to Tottenham.

“But it’s players’ preference again, there will be no shortage of interest in him. he’s a homegrown Chelsea player there may be some personal dislike there. there’s no love lost, they don’t do deals with each other.

“The fans there’s a lot of animosity with each other and for his own future you wonder where the player would want to go but from a Tottenham point of view he’d be a great acquisition.”

Tottenham to bid for Chelsea ace Conor Gallagher?

It seems inevitable from an outside point of view that Chelsea will have to sell players, although the club have always maintained their confidence they will stay within PSR limits.

But if there is a chance for Tottenham to do business for Gallagher then you get the sense it is an opportunity they will look to take as this rumour just isn’t going away.

Conor Gallagher has been linked with moves to Tottenham and Aston Villa.

A “cheeky bid” would indeed probably be the route Daniel Levy would take initially and if there’s a chance to get Gallagher for around £30-40m that would represent pretty good business in today’s market.

Where it becomes complicated, of course, is if other clubs do try and get involved as that would potentially spark a bidding war.
