Ben Davies ‘receives nine offers to quit Tottenham’ amid contract update

Tottenham defender Ben Davies’ long-term future has finally been clarified.

Davies joined Tottenham from Swansea City in 2014, which makes him the current longest-serving Spurs player.

After more than a decade of service, Davies finally won a trophy with Tottenham as the Lilywhites lifted the UEFA Europa League.

And after months of uncertainty, Davies now knows where he will be playing his football next season.

Tottenham extend Davies’ contract for another year

Davies’ contract was set to expire on 30 June.

However, Tottenham have now confirmed (8 June) that they have exercised their option to extend the Welshman’s deal by a further year, keeping him in North London until 2026.

Things might have been different, though, as Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes eight or nine clubs wanted to sign Davies this summer.

“Davies would walk into another club,” Wenham said.

“I’m sure he received eight or nine offers before this contract announcement. He’s been linked with Wrexham, and I saw something about a move to Leeds.

“I suppose Tottenham were waiting for a decision to be made on the manager before deciding what will happen with Davies. However, this is an experienced defender who can fill in across the backline. Therefore, his stay is welcome.”

Tottenham’s decision to extend Davies’ stay was the right one

Davies has always been a reliable option at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

He made 28 appearances this season despite not being a regular starter. Indeed, the Lilywhites will compete in the UEFA Champions League next season and will need strong rotation options to succeed.

Take recent Champions League winners PSG as an example. The French club won the title for the first time in their history without Kylian Mbappe, Neymar or Lionel Messi.

Luis Enrique mentioned that he wanted 22 world-class players in his squad, and while that may be a little too much to ask for from Tottenham, the premise is still the same.

When there are lots of games to play, solid rotational options become essential. It is almost impossible to ask players to demonstrate the same level of intensity when playing two or three games a week.

Even PSG’s best player nd current Ballon d’Or favourite, Ousmane Dembele, played only 1,736 minutes in Ligue 1, so that he could be fresh for the Champions League.

If Tottenham want to find similar success, they need to follow a similar blueprint. The extension of Davies is a good start, but the North London club will need to make solid investments in the summer window soon.
