Aston Villa loss ‘spells the end’ of Eric Dier at Tottenham – Expert

Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…

John Wenham believes the 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa “spells the end” of Eric Dier’s Tottenham career despite the 30-year-old not getting any minutes on the pitch.

Ange Postecoglou opted not to start with Dier at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday 26 November, preferring full-backs Emerson Royal and Ben Davies to play in the heart of his defence instead of the Englishman.

In the end, Spurs would throw away a 1-0 lead given to them midway through the first half by Giovani Lo Celso, with goals from Pau Torres and Ollie Watkins handing Unai Emery’s side all three points, which saw the Villans leapfrog their opponents into fourth place.

Wenham believes that the afternoon would have acted as a message to Dier about his standing in north London and would have led him to make a big decision about his future.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “That defeat against Aston Villa probably spells the end of Dier’s time at Tottenham.

“For him not to be included against Aston Villa despite being the only fit natural centre-back at the club who was available, I think that really spells the end for him.

“I think he’ll have enough ambition and respect for himself to realise that and I think he will already be pushing for a move in January.

“I know there have been reports that he will stay till the end of the season, but I think Tottenham will probably accept a cut-price deal for him and he will go in January.”

In other Tottenham news, Wenham was left furious after a “criminal” mistake made by Postecoglou during the defeat against Aston Villa.
