Archie Gray to Real Madrid: Former Tottenham scout speaks out after £40m+ news

Real Madrid have been credited with an interest in Tottenham gem Archie Gray.

As reported by Fichajes (12 January), Los Blancos are preparing to move for the 18-year-old in the winter transfer window and are willing to make an offer of £42million.

Gray has impressed while playing out of position for Ange Postecoglou’s side, and high hopes have emerged for the player’s long-term future in North London. Therefore, it is no surprise that some of Europe’s biggest clubs might be taking a closer look.

However, ex-Spurs scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – doesn’t think there is any truth to these reports.

“I don’t believe this rumour,” King said.

“I’m not having that. Why would they be interested in Gray? If they’re going to spend money on a Tottenham player then they’d sign Micky van de Ven.

“To me, it sounds like somebody is filling space in the newspapers. Real Madrid looking at Gray? Maybe in two or three years, once he is established, not now. We’re not playing fantasy football here.”

Real Madrid interested in Tottenham gem Archie Gray?

It does feel as though it would be quite early for Gray to make a move to a club such as Real Madrid.

The versatile youngster has been asked to play out of position at centre-back in recent weeks and hasn’t even yet had a chance to demonstrate what he can do in his natural midfield position. Therefore, he would no doubt be better off staying put at Tottenham, even if Madrid were to make an offer.

While supporters are often left frustrated by Spurs’ transfer business, it does feel as though they got a good deal with Gray – as a further £10million agreement is speculated with Leeds United.

Should the England youth international continue on this trajectory, he could soon be worth much more than the £30million fee Spurs paid for him [via BBC Sport, 2 July]. Therefore, it is hard to see any situation where Spurs accept just over £40million for the teenager.
