Archie Gray ‘shocks Totteham coaches’ at Hotspur Way – Darke

Tottenham Hotspur talent Archie Gray has shown himself to be a “shining light” during a difficult season, according to Ian Darke.

The TV commentator, speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, has admitted he had “no idea” – and neither did many coaches – that Gray could be so capable as a centre-half, where he has largely filled in during the absence of several defenders.

Ange Postecoglou has moulded the 18-year-old into a regular current defensive starter, having signed him from Leeds United last summer in a £25million deal.

“He’s obviously a cracking kid, humble and very, very talented. I didn’t and most coaches probably had no idea he could even play centre-back,” Darke said.

“He was a midfielder at Leeds used at right-back, and Spurs have used him in many positions already.

“Gray is still only a kid, but his maturity and talent are getting him through – he’s a shining light and Lucas Bergvall isn’t far behind.”

Archie Gray carrying hope at Tottenham

While Tottenham are nosediving in the Premier League – aiming to end their poor run against Leicester City this weekend (26 January) – Gray has featured in many external competitions in which the club have thrived.

Spurs are still fighting on four fronts this season and Gray has become a mainstay in the side, now working himself into an available position in the Premier League and adapting well.

The teenage talent signed a six-year contract in North London when he arrived from boyhood club Leeds six months ago, in it for the long haul as a Lilywhite.
