Antonio Musa door open for Tottenham again after hijacked transfer stalls at Brentford – Sky Sports pundit
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium…
Paul Robinson has suggested that the door could be open again for Tottenham to do a deal for Antonio Nusa after their transfer talks were hijacked by Brentford.
Football London had reported on 21 January that Spurs had “stolen a march” on Chelsea by moving ahead on a £30million move for the Club Brugge attacker, only for the Bees to steal in ahead themselves, but Sky Sports then reported on 30 January that their own move was “stalling”.
Robinson believes the teenager is a “quality” youngster who would be a strong addition to Ange Postecoglou’s squad, but feels he may have chosen Brentford due to greater opportunities to play given how strong Spurs’ attacking options are.
The Sky Sports pundit admits that it would be a “big coup” if Brentford overcame the likes of Tottenham and Newcastle to sign Nusa, but with Timo Werner already brought in this month on top of Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski, Richarlison and captain Son Heung-min there is a blocked pathway in North London.
The opportunity appears to have presented itself again though if Spurs want to make a final late push for their man but the starting XI remains a big ask for the 18-year-old.
Robinson exclusively told Tottenham News: “Nusa’s a quality young player and he’s been touted for a while now to come to the Premier League.
“Tottenham were interested. There was talk that Newcastle were interested as well but we all know about their Financial Fair Play situation.
“Brentford have always been admirers of him. I think one thing they’ve struggled with since being in the Premier League is taking that next-level step with signings, competing with the likes of Newcastle and Tottenham for the top quality players around Europe.
“If they have managed to secure the signature it’s a big coup for them if he’s wanted by Tottenham and Newcastle.
“Maybe it’s the player’s desire to play in the Premier League and to play football, because look at the Spurs and Newcastle squads.
“Where Tottenham have the most strength is in the wide attacking areas, and that’s where he is.
“Timo Werner’s come in as we know. They’ve got Brennan Johnson there. They’ve got Kulusevski there. Richarlison’s there, Son’s to come back from the Asian Cup.

“So the quality that Spurs have got you wouldn’t necessarily come into that side and play, whereas he may have opted for Brentford, if they can get it over the line, based on that fact that he’s going to play football rather than sit and wait and be a bit-part player.
“If the Brentford deal has stalled for whatever reason, if what we’re led to believe is right, then it does open the door for others.
“For Tottenham he would be a quality addition but I’m not sure that he would fit straight into the starting XI.”
