Ange Postecoglou told to axe Timo Werner for Tottenham clash v Aston Villa in Premier League

Ex-Tottenham employee Bryan King believes that Ange Postecoglou should drop Timo Werner and start Brennan Johnson against Aston Villa, despite the German’s goalscoring display last time out.

Spurs will look to move within two points of Unai Emery’s side and the Premier League top four when they travel to Villa Park on Sunday (10 March).

It is a big match which could have serious implications on which team qualifies for next season’s UEFA Champions League, and Postecoglou will have to ensure he gets his team selection spot on.

Despite Werner grabbing his first goal in Spurs colours in his most recent outing, King feels that the forward should make way for Johnson against Villa.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, King said: “I would play Johnson over Werner. I would have Johnson on the left with Dejan Kulusevski on the right and Son Heung-min up front.

“Johnson always causes teams problems and I think he offers more than Werner does. Why not start Johnson and bring Werner off the bench?”

“For some reason, Werner seems to start every game. I know he scored his first goal for the club against Palace, but it was Johnson who did all of the work.”

Johnson was incredibly impressive during his cameo appearance against Crystal Palace (2 March).

With Spurs 1-0 down, Johnson came off the bench and made the difference, inspiring his side to a 3-1 win.

His assist for Werner’s equaliser was a product of hard work and his determination not to give up on the ball as he won back possession and battled toward the box, laying a pinpoint pass into the path of Werner who couldn’t miss.

He got a second assist in the dying moments of the match as he played Son Heung-min through, the South Korea international showing great composure in front of goal to finish and make sure the three points stayed in North London.

It was the type of performance which deserves to be rewarded, and Postecoglou should seriously consider starting the Wales international on Sunday.
