Ange Postecoglou could remain at Tottenham with £15m+ boost on the cards

Ange Postecoglou may yet be offered a lifeline to remain in charge at Tottenham beyond the summer.

Postecoglou has been walking a tightrope for most of the season, and will be thankful that the three promoted teams could not mount a better challenge in the Premier League to threaten his side with relegation.

The former Celtic manager has quickly fallen out of favour with the Spurs faithful, making his relationship with Daniel Levy increasingly fractious.

The Australians’ lifeline has been the success in the Europa League, with the final next Wednesday (21 May) likely to have a bearing on the final decision.

Europa League prize money could be saving grace

Tottenham would receive a huge financial windfall in excess of £15million if they were not only to be crowned winners of the tournament, but by default also qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2022.

Although Levy already has potential replacements in mind, his stance could yet be swayed.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, John Wenham, the founder of reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose, argued Postecoglou’s job could yet be saved.

“If Postecoglou doesn’t win the Europa League, he will be gone,” Wenham said.

“I don’t think anybody can dispute that. However, if he does win the Europa League, I’m not so sure what will happen. Previously, I would have said that I still think he will be gone.

“However, for a club that has been so desperate to win a trophy, the emotion behind that could lead to Postecoglou being given another chance.

They could let him have another go, give him some of the money that comes from qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.

“I don’t think it is as certain now as it was a couple of weeks ago.”

Eric Ten Haag conundrum

Spurs could be in a similar position to Manchester United last season, who similarly looked destined to move on from their manager Erik ten Hag before his surprise FA Cup victory against their noisy neighbours.

It was initially seen as a mistake, although Ruben Amorim’s spell with the Red Devils has seen their league form deteriorate at the same alarming pace as Tottenham’s.

It is a small sample size to base a decision on, and given Levy’s propensity to flit between different directions not working in recent years, it would maybe be wise to finally stick seen one project through.
