Ange Postecoglou baffles after ‘bizarre’ decision in Tottenham draw v Rangers
Ange Postecoglou made a “bizarre” decision regarding Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur in the 1-1 draw with Rangers on Thursday.
Postecoglou did little to ease the pressure on his shoulders after his Spurs side delivered an underwhelming display at Ibrox in the UEFA Europa League on 12 December.
The Australian is clearly starting to feel that pressure, with Spurs winless in their last five matches, and was slammed by one Sky Sports journalist for what he did after the match.
And it isn’t just his post-match behaviour which has come under scrutiny, with Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham questioning why Rodrigo Bentancur was hooked during an exclusive conversation with Tottenham News.
“When you take Bentancur off, you’re also bringing on a player who could be saved,” Wenham said.
“I actually thought Bentancur was playing quite well too, at least his passes were accurate. Therefore, I was surprised by that decision, it was a bit bizarre.
“This is a player who isn’t available for selection domestically at the moment. Therefore, he needs the game time wherever he can get it. In addition, he is one of our better players anyway, so for me, he should be playing the full 90 minutes, unless he were to pick up an injury or booking perhaps.”

Bentancur is currently suspended from domestic competition and only available to feature in Europe. However, despite this fact, Postecoglou still decided to replace the midfielder in the 61st minute at Ibrox.
Therefore, it is understandable why fans might question this, as a top-quality player who isn’t available for selection on the weekend should surely be completing the full 90 minutes, especially with the Spurs squad so thin at the moment.
Postecoglou made the same decision in the 2-2 Europa League draw with Roma at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium [28 November].
As a result, fans would surely like to know the thinking behind these rather baffling decisions.
