Alejo Véliz ‘to be sold for cut-price fee’ as Tottenham transfer news emerges

Alejo Véliz could be sold by Tottenham for a low initial fee as long as one particular clause is included as transfer news emerges from Argentina.

Dominic Solanke is the number one striker in North London, even if he did leave Ange Postecolou furious in the 2-0 Premier League defeat against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday (16 March).

When Solanke isn’t playing, Spurs also have Son Heung-min and Mathys Tel, who was involved in an exchange with some furious Tottenham fans after defeat against Marco Silva’s side.

And then there is Dane Scarlett, who has emerged as an option in recent months. Therefore, that doesn’t leave much room for Véliz, who has been sent out on loan twice since arriving at Tottenham from Rosario Central in the summer of 2023 for £13million.

The 21-year-old has struggled to make an impact for Espanyol this season, scoring just one goal in La Liga, and it looks as though the striker could soon be returning to Argentina.

River Plate want to sign Tottenham striker Véliz

Véliz’s time with Espanyol this season has been a complete failure, and the Argentinian was expected to be recalled by Tottenham in the winter transfer window.

However, that didn’t happen, and it now looks as though he might never play for Postecoglou’s side again. As reported by River Noticias (12 March), River Plate are interested in signing Véliz.

And Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – thinks a low initial fee could be agreed, if a sell-on clause is included.

“I think it would make sense to sell Véliz,” Wenham said.

“It has never really happened for the striker at Tottenham. I’ve always thought that if he is going to go out on loan, it needs to be a Championship club. However, for whatever reason, that has never happened.

“And if we’re being brutally honest, neither of his loan moves to Spain have worked. I wouldn’t mind one more year if he is loaned out to the Championship, but if he doesn’t want to do that, he should just be sold.

“River Plate won’t be able to offer a lot of money. Therefore, perhaps Daniel Levy could sanction his exit for quite a low initial fee, and include a 50 per cent sell on clause, or something along those lines. That would be a good move for Véliz.”

Tottenham should sell Véliz

While Véliz hasn’t been given much of a chance, there is surely a reason for this.

Therefore, if a club are interested in signing the forward, perhaps it is time for Tottenham to accept that this was a transfer mistake, and cut ties.
