Ajayi behind-the-scenes claim shared after ‘surprise’ Tottenham development
Damola Ajayi is the latest young player for Tottenham supporters to keep an eye on in North London.
Ange Postecoglou’s side recently recorded a 3-0 UEFA Europa League win over IF Elfsborg at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday (30 January). However, not every player was at his best.
Ajayi made his Tottenham his debut in the match, scoring the game’s second goal just minutes after coming onto the pitch, having recently signed a new contract at the club.
And Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – has shared more details about a conversation he had with Spurs’ former performance director, Grétar Steinsson
“It was a big surprise to see Ajayi come on and score,” Wenham said.
“I didn’t expect him to play. However, don’t get me wrong, Ajayi is a good player, and that was shown as he was rewarded with a new three-and-a-half-year contract recently.
“Tottenham like him a lot. I remember speaking to Steinsson, who told me that Ajayi is a very good player who is highly regarded at Tottenham.
“Therefore, it was fantastic to see him score, and it will give him great confidence.”
Damola Ajayi set for more opportunities at Tottenham?
Postecoglou has seen plenty of young players burst onto the scene at Tottenham this season. Therefore, despite all of Spurs’ struggles this term, fans can at least be optimistic about the club’s future prospects.
Teenagers playing in the first-team has become the norm in North London over the past few months.
As a result, there is no reason why Ajayi won’t be handed more opportunities in the coming weeks, and there is still time for the 18-year-old to have the breakthrough season he was previously mooted to have.

However, with the likes of Mikey Moore, Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray shining, the competition for places in the Spurs team is fierce, even among the youngsters.
Therefore, Ajayi must work hard to ensure he keeps receiving first-team chances. However, if he keeps making an impact off the bench as he did against Elfsborg, he is bound to play plenty of minutes.
