Adam Wharton concern emerges after £60m Tottenham transfer news

Tottenham could be reluctant to sign Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton for one reason.

Ange Postecoglou will have some big decisions to make regarding his squad should he remain in charge of Tottenham this summer.

A few midfielders are out of contract at the end of next season, which means decisions will need to be made on their futures this summer. One of those midfielders is Rodrigo Bentancur, who could be offered a new Spurs contract worth £150,000-a-week.

Should Bentancur sign this deal, Yves Bissouma could be sold.

And it looks as though Tottenham already have a replacement in mind for the Mali international.

Tottenham to battle Aston Villa and Newcastle for Wharton

As reported by GiveMeSport (27 February), Tottenham, Aston Villa and Newcastle United have all joined the race to sign Wharton from Crystal Palace.

Manchester United have cooled their interest, boosting those three clubs’ hopes. However, Wharton had a price tag of £60million heading into the winter transfer window and still has four years left on his contract at Selhurst Park. Therefore, agreeing a deal this summer could prove difficult.

And Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – thinks Spurs might struggle to hand over £60m for a player they could have once signed for much less.

“I think the club might be reluctant to pay that much money for Wharton,” Wenham said.

“You’ve got to remember that Tottenham extensively scouted Wharton before he joined Palace, and they had the opportunity to sign him for about £3million.

“Therefore, to now hand Palace £60m I imagine will be quite difficult to do. Would Wharton improve us? Absolutely. He would be a phenomenal upgrade on Bissouma, and I would love to sign him. However, it isn’t easy getting players out of Palace.

“A lot of these clubs don’t need our money, and I think Tottenham could find it difficult to stomach paying £60m for a player they could have signed for £3m.”

Tottenham should pay £60m to sign Wharton

While it might be difficult to accept paying the £60m, Spurs need to get over themselves.

Wharton is a fantastic talent who is only going to continue to improve, and if they don’t sign him, another Premier League club will.

Therefore, Spurs should be doing everything they can to bring the 21-year-old to the club before somebody else snaps him up.
