Tottenham ‘confirm Timo Werner exit’ as Ange Postecoglou decision revealed

Tottenham have all but confirmed that Timo Werner is set to leave the club as a new Ange Postecoglou decision is announced.

Werner did just enough to earn a full season in North London after arriving on a six-month loan deal from RB Leipzig midway through the 2023-24 season, bagging two goals and three assists in 13 Premier League appearances.

With Spurs including an option to make the move permanent for £8.5million [Evening Standard], this was a golden opportunity for the Germany international to excel in England after his failed spell at Chelsea.

However, the attacker’s performances this season have left much to be desired as he has failed to score a single goal in 22 games in the Premier League and the UEFA Europa League, and it appears he has fumbled his chance to earn a permanent move to North London.

Timo Werner can pack his bags as Tottenham confirm squad decision

Tottenham confirmed their 22-man squad for the knockout phase of the Europa League on Friday (7 February) and Werner is nowhere to be seen.

The 28-year-old, who appeared in five group stage games, is one of three players who have been removed from the squad, with winter signing Mathys Tel taking his place.

It is worth noting that Wilson Odobert has been named in the squad ahead of Werner despite the former Burnley ace only making five appearances for Spurs this season.

This confirms that the Leipzig loanee has fallen out of favour under Postecoglou, meaning he can give up hopes of signing a permanent contract at Tottenham.

With significant competition from places in attack, it is hard to see Werner get enough playing time between now and the end of the season, let alone claw his way back into the Greek-Australian manager’s plans for the future.

Timo Werner to return to Germany

As Tottenham have all but confirmed their decision not to sign Werner, he is set to return to Leipzig at the end of the season.

However, he is unlikely to have a future there as well, meaning a move to a smaller club in Germany might be best suited for him as he looks to get his career back on track.

Unlike the Premier League, the former VfB Stuttgart ace has more chances of finding joy back in his home country.

Alternatively, he could head to the United States, where the New York Red Bulls have shown an interest in signing him [Santi Aouna].
