Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony was stunned by the transfer of Mathys Tel to Tottenham for £50million on deadline day.

Throughout the window, the need for a striker arrival at Spurs was evident, though they had to wait until the very last minute to secure a deal for Tel from Bayern.

The Frenchman certainly cost a pretty penny, with MacAnthony stunned by the nature of the transfer when discussing the deal live on talkSPORT (3 February).

The Peterborough chairman said: “Don’t ever tell me English players are expensive, by the way. A 19-year-old for £50m, who has scored four goals for Bayern Munich.

“I laugh. I find it funny that people are getting excited about a 19-year-old no one had heard of two weeks ago, that’s where we are with deadline day.

“I hope it works for Spurs, I hope he’s a superstar, I hope he’s the second coming of whoever else at 19. Really, £50m? And the kids getting the last laugh.”

Tottenham take a gamble on Mathys Tel - it’s worth the risk

Signing a player with little experience always has its gambles but in this case for Spurs, it’s one that is certainly worth taking in their attempts to progress.

Tel, although he hasn’t played regular minutes in Germany, has shown plenty signs of promise and his potential is massive with many, many years of development ahead of him.

Given the position Tottenham find themselves in and the season they are enduring, they needed to take a gamble in the winter and they have succeeded in that with the signing of Tel.

Quite frankly, the £50m is irrelevant for now. That only comes into play if Spurs opt to trigger the permanent clause in his contract but for now, Tottenham can effectively treat this as a trial period that can have a huge influence on the remainder of the season.
