View: Tottenham could land the next big star out of South America in Alejo Veliz
Tottenham have long had a history with the stars of Argentina and might now be looking to continue that trend.
Ricardo Villa and Osvaldo Ardiles are two names who are adored in the stands at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Ardiles in particular still holds a strong connection with the North London club.
Through to the modern day and the likes of Cristian Romero, Erik Lamela and Giovani Lo Celso not to mention beloved manager Mauricio Pochettino – although that opinion might now have understandably changed drastically across the fanbase following his appointment by rivals Chelsea.

However, the truth remains that Spurs have often had a strong connection to the stars of South America’s second-largest country and could now once again be forging a new relationship with a player of Argentinian heritage.
TyC sports journalist Cesar Luis Merlo provided an update via Twitter (2 August) that Tottenham were in advanced negotiations with Rosario Central to sign 2003-born striker Alejo Veliz.
This report was then supported by Fabrizio Romano who also tweeted (2 August) that the Premier League club have approached the Argentinian side and despite there being no agreement in place, negotiations are concrete and a decision is to be made in a few days.
Of course, beyond Spurs’ stars, there is a long list of legendary Argentinian footballers who have lit up the European stage, with this list featuring the obvious inclusion of Lionel Messi as well as the likes of Sergio Aguero and Angel Di Maria.
As a whole the continent of South America has been home to some of football’s most gifted players to ever grace the pitch and while we are a long way away from even considering Veliz near that list, given most supporters wouldn’t have even heard of him, the link between himself and Spurs will excite fans.
And that excitement will only be further fuelled by the numbers he is currently putting up at the age of just 19. During the 2021/22 season, he began to feature regularly in the Liga Profesional, scoring six times in 20 starts. This season, he has taken his game to another level.
He has 11 goals in 23 matches and made his national team debut in January of this year when he was called up to represent the Argentinian Under-20s, who he has now featured for nine times, scoring on three occasions.
In other Tottenham news, a deal for a new central defender is finally advancing to the final stages.
