Tynan Thompson knocking on first-team door at Tottenham after what he’s done for Under-21s
Tynan Thompson has set the Premier League 2 alight for Tottenham’s Under-21s this season.
Whether it be Mikey Moore, who is thriving out on loan at Rangers, or Luca Williams-Barnett, who is awaiting his first real chance in North London, Spurs have a whole host of exciting academy prospects.
Among that list is Thompson, who has been with Tottenham throughout his whole career so far, and at just 17 years old, is already featuring regularly for their Under-21 side.
Not only is he impressive at that level, but he has one attribute in particular that makes him stand out from the rest, and could be the reason he is able to make the step up to senior level.
Tynan Thompson’s dribbling stats showcase why he’s destined for top
Thompson has one goal and four assists for Tottenham’s Under-21s this season, having started five games and made an appearance in 10.
It means he is averaging a goal involvement every 116 minutes, which is an impressive return in itself for someone of his age.
For the Under-19s, he has seven goals and two assists in seven games, again showcasing his remarkable form in front of goal.
However, it is his dribbling ability that actually makes him stand out, with 23 completed dribbles within those 10 Premier League 2 appearances.
The teenager has a 76.7 per cent dribble success rate, which places him in the top five per cent of players in the division.
Added to that, Thompson has won 51 duels, drawn 13 fouls from opponents, and created 10 chances so far this season, with three of those being deemed as big chances.
The reason why Thompson could break through sooner rather than later
Thompson is an out-and-out left winger, and Tottenham are lacking in that area of the pitch.
Xavi Simons has been utilised there more often than not, but it’s clear that the Dutchman is at his best when playing a central role in the Premier League.
Almost all of their wide options are better used from the right, with the likes of Mohammed Kudus, Dejan Kulusevksi and Wilson Odobert.
With two of the above out injured, there’s no reason for Igor Tudor to ignore the quality that Tottenham have in their academy, and in particular, that of Thompson.
