Tottenham must ensure ‘stunning’ Luca Gunter does not suffer after announcement on Tuesday

Ange Postecoglou must ensure Luca Gunter does not suffer at Tottenham after a contract announcement on Tuesday (28 May).

Spurs are currently well-stocked when it comes to goalkeepers in North London.

Guglielmo Vicario enjoyed a positive debut season, while Under-21 ace Josh Keeley impressed on loan in the National League with Barnet.

And another keeper on the club’s books, Brandon Austin, has decided to extend his stay at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

As per the club’s official website (28 May), the 25-year-old has signed a new contract which runs until 2029.

While this might be a positive boost for Postecoglou, he must ensure another of the club’s talented goalkeepers, Gunter, doesn’t suffer from the decision.

Luca Gunter has proved to Ange Postecoglou he deserves a chance at Tottenham

Gunter enjoyed a positive 2023/24 campaign.

He was instrumental in Tottenham’s Under-21s finishing top of the Premier League 2 and winning the competition’s play-offs.

Spurs beat Sunderland’s Under-21s 3-1 in the final of the Premier League 2 play-offs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday (26 May).

While it was the impressive Will Lankshear and George Abbott who got the goals, Spurs wouldn’t have won if not for Gunter’s contributions between the sticks.

As per the club’s official website (26 May), the 19-year-old made a “stunning reflex save” in the first half, before once again acting as the “saviour” with two more big stops in the second.

Gunter’s performance and season demonstrate that he could be set for a big future with Tottenham.

However, Austin is only 25, and with the goalkeeper now contracted to the club for another five years, Gunter could struggle to break into the first team, especially with Keeley also around.

Postecoglou cannot let this become a problem and must ensure not to ignore Gunter at Tottenham.
