Tottenham have no choice but to sell Dane Scarlett as Alejo Veliz roadblock emerges
Tottenham may be forced to sell academy sensation Dane Scarlett this summer after the way Alejo Veliz’s loan spell at Sevilla has gone.
The Whites opted to loan out the young Argentine striker during the January transfer window, with the La Liga side keen to bring him in to bolster their attacking options.
But Veliz has really struggled for game time in Seville, featuring for just 23 minutes across three games in Spain and even failing to make the matchday squad on occasion.
A return to north London now looks inevitable in the summer ahead of the 2024/25 season, and Ange Postecoglou is going to be tasked with finding a solution that helps the player’s development best but also helps the club get value for the money they spent on him.
After joining Sevilla, Veliz revealed to the press that he had a conversation with Postecoglou before leaving which suggested he has a future at the club.
“He [Postecoglou] told me to take advantage of this opportunity in a huge club and to do my best to try to gain minutes”, Veliz told Sevilla’s media. “Then, time will tell.”
Son Heung-min has been the first-choice number nine this season while Richarlison, Brennan Johnson and Timo Werner have all also featured in that position at different points, and the German could yet sign permanently amid a £14.5m option in his loan from RB Leipzig.
Dane Scarlett will surely leave Tottenham this summer
But while the club have got plenty of attacking options as they look to make it into the Champions League, that spells bad news for one academy gem in particular.
Scarlett has long been tipped to be the next big thing to come out of N17, but his pathway now seems blocked.
He was allowed to leave on loan for the first half of the season and joined Ipswich, but returned in January when Veliz left. However he has been given barely any game time and at 20 years old, he is at a critical moment in his career.

After signing a new contract with the club until 2027, Tottenham have got a decision to make. However, with so many senior options at the club plus Veliz ready to return it seems inevitable that Scarlett will be allowed to move on.
With FFP and PSR a huge talking point in the Premier League currently, selling Scarlett would go down as pure profit on the accounts for the club and would allow him to move on and develop his career elsewhere.
Fans would always prefer to see one of their own come through and make it at the club, but the chances of Scarlett – who also spent time on loan at Portsmouth last season – now making it seem impossible.
