Tottenham fans have been given a fresh reason to be positive about the future after youngster George Abbott put pen to paper on a new contract.
The Spurs Under-21s skipper has signed a new three-year deal until 2027 after an impressive campaign this season, the club announced on Thursday, May 9.
And it’s yet another sign that the future in N17 is looking bright with a host of young talent ready to step up and prove themselves at a time where there are plenty of first-team opportunities there to be taken.
Ange Postecoglou must keep youth pathway open at Tottenham
Ange Postecoglou has admitted he is expecting a lot of change with his first-team squad during the upcoming summer transfer window, but that doesn’t mean that everyone who leaves will be replaced by a new signing.
The Under-21 team has been sensational this season, finishing top of the Premier League 2 before the competition entered it’s playoff phase and Abbott was a huge reason behind that, with the official club website describing him as “excellent” [6 May].
The 18-year-old is skippering the side and has shown natural leadership and quality, and in a defensive midfield position that is sure to be targeted this summer he has a chance to prove to Postecoglou he can be an option.
The defensive midfielder has got a fantastic passing range, reads the game way beyond his years and is strong in the tackle too. Physically he is a good size too, and he has all the tools to become an asset to the squad.
The new contract shows the club’s belief in him and Postecoglou has never had an issue with using young players when the opportunity presents itself.
Pre-season would be the perfect time for the manager to prove he values youth and the pathway to the future of the club by giving Abbott an opportunity, and fans should be ecstatic that the best youngsters are pledging their future to the team.
