Mikey Moore proves he is ready for Tottenham first-team after what he did on Thursday
Any doubts Ange Postecoglou had about using Mikey Moore in the Tottenham first-team next season should no longer exist.
Moore has enjoyed a sensational breakthrough month, becoming Spurs’ youngest-ever Premier League player in a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City (14 May).
He would make a further appearance in the 3-0 win away at Sheffield United (19 May) before heading off to the UEFA Under-17 European Championship.
His performances in the group stages caught plenty of people’s attention, and all eyes were on him as England’s Under-17s took on Italy’s Under-17s in the quarter-final on Thursday (30 May).
The match would end in penalty shoot-out heartbreak for the Young Lions after a 1-1 draw.
And although Moore is heading home, he is heading home with an enhanced reputation.
Mikey Moore ready for first-team football at Tottenham
There was plenty to take away from Moore’s display against Italy.
As per the Tottenham website (30 May), “Moore set up Ethan Nwaneri’s 16th-minute opener for England with another superb driving run”.
But this wasn’t the most eye-catching thing Moore did against Italy.
The Tottenham youngster stepped up first to take a penalty for England and made no mistake from the spot.
While it might seem like a small detail, it goes a long way in demonstarting the 16-year-old’s incredible mentality.
Taking the first spot-kick is never easy, especially not for your country.
He no doubt has quality, and he has proven to Postecoglou that the mental side of his game is there too.
While Moore shouldn’t necessarily be starting every week, there is no reason he shouldn’t feature regularly.
With UEFA Europa League football on the agenda next season, there will be plenty of minutes to go around.
And a considerable amount of those should be handed to Moore.
