Ange Postecoglou should keep a close eye on Ellis Lehane as Tottenham Under-18s striker nets in FA Youth Cup

Tottenham Under-18s are enjoying a fine season, which will only be to the benefit of Ange Postecoglou who could soon have his pick of academy talent.

Spurs’ Under-21s are flying high, sitting top of Premier League 2 with a 100 per cent record in the competition, and as a result, several players at that level have been sent out on loan or called up to first-team squads this season.

While the Under-21s continue to excel, the Under-18s below them are also shining, suggesting that Tottenham could be set for a host of exciting academy graduates to come through their ranks over the next few years.

Names such as Jamie Donley, Mikey Moore, Alfie Dorrington and Tyrese Hall have attracted plenty of attention this season from within Hotspur Way, but there is an even younger player who will also be of excitement to those at the club.

Ellis Lehane has only recently turned 17 years old but has already been scoring at an impressive rate for the Under-18s this season, and netted once again in their recent FA Youth Cup victory.

Tottenham advanced to the fourth round of the competition by beating Brentford Under-18s 5-1 last month (5 December 2023) and made it two wins from two with a professional 3-1 victory away at Burton Albion Under-18s on Tuesday 16 January.

Hall continued his impressive form in midfield with a strong individual display and gave the visitors a deserved lead on the stroke of half-time.

With just 65 seconds on the clock in the second half, Lehane got himself on the scoresheet, as he swept home Damola Ajayi’s ball into the box at the back post.

Burton did hit back and threatened to add an equaliser, but Oliver Irow settled the contest, adding a third in stoppage time to ensure it would be Tottenham who advanced into the last 16 of the prestigious national youth competition.

It is a competition which gives young talent a platform to shine, and Lehane will look to continue doing that in the next round.

The striker has so far started and completed 90 minutes in both FA Youth Cup fixtures, while he has also started seven of the club’s 12 Under-18 Premier League South matches, scoring five goals and providing one assist.

With plenty of time still to go until his 18th birthday in October of this year, Lehane is certainly a player for supporters to keep an eye on as he continues to develop.
