Ange Postecoglou must promote Tottenham ‘wonder’ Luca Gunter after what he did v Chelsea

Ange Postecoglou can no longer ignore Luca Gunter after what the Tottenham Under-21s shot-stopper pulled off against Chelsea on Sunday (19 May).

Wayne Burnett’s side got back to winning ways with a crucial 2-1 victory over Chelsea in the Premier League 2 play-off semi-final at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Will Lankshear opened the scoring before Deivid Washington scored a late equaliser – a goal that looked to be sending the game to extra time before Nile John popped up with a winner in added time.

Despite the excitement from both goals, Postecoglou should be focusing on another important moment during the match, as 19-year-old Gunter pulled off a “wonder save” in the dying seconds to consolidate the win [Tottenham Hotspur].

The shot-stopper has been an integral part of Spurs’ U21s in the second half of the season, an impact that should not be ignored by the first-team manager ahead of the club’s pre-season tour.

While Gunter has not been lucky enough to be selected for Tottenham’s trip to Australia, facing Newcastle United on Wednesday 22 May, he is a player who must be considered moving forward.

Lucas Gunter leaves a message for Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham

Spurs are very lucky with the number of talented goalkeepers at the club currently, especially since the addition of Guglielmo Vicario. However, that does not mean there cannot be more competition.

The 19-year-old has yet to experience any senior football but has proven to be a very important asset for the club’s youth sides, which could sway Postecoglou’s goalkeeper decisions ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

He also boasts plenty of involvement with England’s Under-19s and will only continue to grow as Spurs’ youth academy develops and improves.

With the youngsters booking their spot in the Premier League 2 play-off final, Gunter will need to be at the top of his game, as he has been this season, to help Spurs to some silverware this season.
