Tottenham 'very keen' on beating Chelsea to double signing

Tottenham look set to go head-to-head with Chelsea to sign a teenage duo from Middlesbrough.

The Lilywhites have already shown their willingness to go out and sign young players ahead of their rivals this season with Mason Melia signing from St Pat’s.

A record-breaking £1.6million was spent on the 17-year-old [Tom Barclay] who chose a move to N17 despite interest from the likes of Everton, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Spurs may be hopeful of utilising this transfer pull to beat multiple Premier League rivals to the signing of a pair of 16-year-old starlets.

Ange Postecoglou has never been shy about utilising young players in his starting 11, especially with the injury crisis in North London this season.

This has been shown by the influence of Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall who have featured regularly despite their youthful nature.

It appears that the Lilywhites are keen to add to their teenage contingent with the Middlesbrough twins Bailey Palmer and Anton Palmer, according to Graeme Bailey (16 February).

Bailey has already featured in a matchday squad under Michael Carrick but both of the Boro 16-year-olds are highly rated among Premier League sides.

Chelsea have been watching the duo closely but Spurs are "very keen" on persuading the midfielders to leave the Riverside and move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Aston Villa and Brighton are also admirers of the Bailey's who are also looking to bring the pair in ahead of Enzo Maresca's side.

There aren't many sides in the Premier League who are so willing to give young players a chance in the first team so regularly as Spurs.

This has seen Mikey Moore feature regularly in the Europa League and in cup competitions where he has performed at a positive level.

Will Lankshear also featured in Europe before confirming a loan switch to West Brom in January and all these case studies will only make the Lilywhites a more attractive prospect for young players considering a move to North London.

It will certainly be interesting to see if the Bailey twins will be on the move this summer and which Premier League side they opt to move to.
