Tottenham transfer bombshell as Real Madrid set to launch £42m bid for star
Real Madrid are preparing to move for Tottenham star Archie Gray in January, according to Fichajes.
The Spanish news outlet reported on Sunday (12 January) that the 18-year-old is the latest emerging talent on Los Blancos’ radar, and Carlo Ancelotti’s side are willing to table a £42million bid this month.
Ange Postecoglou has relied on Gray to play along the backline and in midfield as he navigates an injury crisis in North London.
The youngster has shown incredible maturity this season, particularly after giving an honest response to the performance during the 3-0 win against Tamworth in the FA Cup on Sunday (12 January).
Tottenham will not sell Archie Gray to Real Madrid
Spurs spent £25m to acquire Gray from Leeds United in the summer [Sky Sports, 2 July 2024], so it’ll take a lot more than £42m to sanction a sale this month.
At one point this season, it looked like Gray would be heading back to West Yorkshire on a loan deal to get more game time, but he has since thrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
His versatility has been an invaluable asset for Postecoglou this year, and that alone would be worth at least £50m.
Real Madrid are the biggest club in world football but clearly they are unaware of English tax, particularly with youngsters, and would be looking at a near nine-figure fee to convince Daniel Levy to sit at the table.

Despite Postecoglou facing an uncertain future in North London, one of the shining lights of the underwhelming campaign is Gray’s resurgence into the first-team fold.
The England Under-21s international will undoubtedly keep his place in the side once the first team regulars return from injury and he will be the cornerstone of this Tottenham side for years to come.
Real Madrid for £42m? No chance.
