Tottenham to pay ‘over the top’ to seal late Marc Guehi agreement tonight

Tottenham should pay “over the top” to sign Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi, according to Tim Sherwood.

Spurs had a £70m offer rejected for the England international [Ed Aarons] on deadline day with the Eagles feeling like they did not have enough time to find a replacement.

The former Lilywhites star believes that the North Londoners should go all out to sign the 24-year-old but concedes it is unlikely before 11 pm tonight.

Speaking live on Sky Sports (3 February, 13:26 pm), he said: “I think he will be one of the best centre-backs they can get.

“If he is available, if you can pay over the top if you can try and make Palace do business, which it is going to be very difficult to do at this stage.”

As Sherwood states, a move for the former Chelsea star is extremely unlikely this late in the winter transfer window.

Spurs have left it too late, the move reeks of desperation from Daniel Levy to try and show supporters that they tried to reinforce Ange Postecoglou’s squad.

If the Lilywhites want Guehi they will likely have to settle for a summer move with Palace unwilling to let the Three Lions ace leave.

Postecoglou’s side are still in need of cover in defence despite signing Kevin Danso from Lens with Micky van de Ven and Christian Romero missing a significant amount of action so far this season resulting in the club sitting in 14th place in the Premier League.

It is unlikely that they will be able to secure a defender of the quality of the Palace star this late in the window so they will have to settle for a lesser option as the deadline approaches.
