Tottenham may have wider area for concern after Elijah Upson contract call

Published on

Elijah Upson is set to leave Tottenham Hotspur upon the expiry of his contract this summer.

As reported by Lilywhite Rose via Instagram, Upson was offered a professional contract but opted to turn it down.

Upson is currently on scholarship terms, with that deal running until the end of this month.

The 18-year-old centre-back is now free to join another club, including one of Spurs' rivals should he wish.

And this could now be part of a wider problem for Tottenham going forward.

Tottenham youngsters rejecting terms always a concern

It is not known exactly why Upson turned down the chance of signing pro terms in North London.

Upson made his England youth debut earlier this year, suggesting he is on the right track to becoming a big hit.

He has also represented the Under-21s side already, but he has largely been used in the Under-18s set-up.

The fact that Malachy Hardy, for example, has played more regularly for the U21s may be behind his thinking.

The wider context is that there has not been that much of a pathway to the first team for youngsters for a while now.

If Upson believes he has a better shot of succeeding elsewhere, even if dropping down a level, then that is a decision that must be respected.

What about Tottenham's other youngsters?

It was also reported by Lilywhite Rose recently that Matthew Craig is another who looks set to depart Tottenham this month.

Leo Black and Tyrell Ashcroft are also going, so there is definitely a theme developing here.

While it is true that it is natural for some youngsters to move on, the bigger picture does raise a little concern.

Supporters will only usually concern themselves with the first team, but bringing through youngsters is imperative.

Right now, there is simply not enough of that going on in N17.
