Tottenham make official bid to seal new midfield transfer already

Tottenham have submitted an official bid for Palmeiras midfielder Richard Rios, according to Area Napoli.

The Italian outlet reported (5 December) that Spurs have tabled an offer for the Colombia international which was rejected by the Brazilian club.

The report states that the Lilywhites face competition from Napoli and other European clubs for the 24-year-old’s signature as they look to bolster their engine room.

However, it also claims that the Sao Paulo club does not plan to sell the player until after the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

Tottenham need midfield signings

Ange Postecoglou’s side have four senior midfielders but all have endured frustrating seasons so far.

Rodrigo Bentancur was banned for seven matches after he used a racial slur about teammate Heung-Min Son last summer and frustrated supporters when picking up a late booking in the 2-2 draw with Wolves that meant he would be banned against Newcastle.

Pepe Matar Sarr has been inconsistent, he has shined in some matches such as the 4-0 win over Manchester City on 23 November but struggled in others, like the 6-3 loss to Liverpool on 22 December.

Meanwhile, Archie Gray has been required to play in a makeshift centre-back role due to injuries to Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Ben Davies.

Rios would provide Postecoglou with a solid option at the base of his midfield and the Spurs boss needs as many bodies as he can get in his squad to save his season in North London.
