Tottenham make £8.5m Timo Werner transfer decision as Postecoglou eyes signings

Tottenham Hotspur have endured issues all season with injuries, lack of form and intense scrutiny from supporters towards various key figures.

Ange Postecoglou and Daniel Levy have each taken the brunt of plenty that has occurred to disappoint Spurs fans this term, with a stark danger of seeing their side stagger to their lowest league finish in over 20 years.

Spurs made several attacking signings in both the summer and winter transfer windows, including the loan deal for Timo Werner from RB Leipzig, the German international largely failing to find his feet in North London.

Tottenham make crucial call on Werner

Tottenham have not been impressed by Werner this season and do not plan to exercise their buy option of £8.5million, according to the Sunday Mirror (pg 66, 2 March).

Ryan Taylor’s report suggests Werner will reassess his options in the summer which potentially include a switch to MLS with New York Red Bulls, the sister club of Leipzig from whom he is currently on loan at Spurs.

The 28-year-old’s market value has fallen drastically due to a lack of convincing form and injuries in recent years, the latest of which coming via a hamstring issue from which Werner returned to action in Wednesday’s Tottenham defeat by Manchester City (26 February).

Werner initially arrived in England in 2020, joining Chelsea for a fee in excess of £43million from Leipzig, where he returned in 2022 having scored 23 goals in 89 games.

Arriving back in the English capital but this time with Postecoglou’s side on what has turned out to become an 18-month loan in January 2024, Werner has since netted just three times – once in 27 appearances this season.

Spurs ready to bolster attack with signings

Tottenham are ready to attack the transfer market in the summer following what is highly likely to be an unsuccessful and nightmare campaign unless they can scoop the Europa League trophy this year.

The silverware on offer is also the last remaining route back into Europe for Spurs, meaning 2025-26 will be either Champions League or nothing at all.

Mathys Tel has shown glimmers for Tottenham since his loan arrival from Bayern Munich on 3 February, and there is a considerable chance his switch is made permanent at the end of the season.

Another striker to be most recently linked to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is Samu Omorodion, the 20-year-old Spanish international having netted 19 goals in 31 games so far this season for Porto.

Postecoglou knows should he remain in post in North London, he simply must start the new season on a positive note and this will include Spurs getting signings arranged as early as possible and fully integrated into the side.

As for Werner, this is simply a transfer that never worked from the start and he needs to get away from Tottenham as soon as he can to allow both parties the much-needed turn of page.
