Tottenham expert delivers brutal Aston Villa and Newcastle reality after Spurs spending complaints

Published on

Aston Villa and Newcastle fans have no right to criticise Tottenham's spending in the transfer window.

That is the verdict from Spurs expert John Wenham, amid complaints that financial restrictions are holding teams back.

The Villans and the Magpies have struggled to figure out a way to balance Profit and Sustainability regulations (PSR) in recent years, and both exceeded the new UEFA Squad Cost Ratio (SCR) rules.

Tottenham have spent approximately £227million on the likes of Mateus Fernandes, Jan Paul van Hecke and Sandro Tonali.

That has led to supporters from the club that can't spend such amounts reacting with anger.

However, Wenham believes that their rage is misplaced.

Why Aston Villa and Newcastle fans have no leg to stand on when it comes to Tottenham's purchasing power

Wenham thinks that the two clubs in question have made questionable decisions in the market.

The Lilywhite Rose account founder believes that the brutal reality has nothing to do with the N17 club and tore into their rivals.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, he said: “Where's the £85m they got for John Duran gone?

"I haven’t got much sympathy [for Aston Villa], I keep hearing from Newcastle fans about this, that and the other.

“Last summer they spent an absolute fortune, and they spent it badly.

“We saw the Nick Woltemade, Yoane Wissa, and Jacob Ramsey deals, they wasted that money, that’s not our problem, and they’re frustrated at Tottenham spending, forgetting that, even this week alone, we have had three sold-out concerts there with more people than we get for a Premier League game.

“Villa Park and St James’ Park have been shut with lights off, while we’re generating money, so I really don’t have any sympathy for them, and they keep banging the drum about it’s not fair.

“Well, nobody put a gun to your head to sell Elliot Anderson for effectively £15m and a Greek goalkeeper that you’ve been trying to shift ever since, that’s the reality.”

How can Tottenham afford their massive spending spree?

Tottenham can spent so much because clubs are allowed to spend up to 85 per cent of their revenue on player wages, transfer amortisation and agent fees, per the new SCR rules.

Their last set of accounts, for the 2024-25 season, showed that they were spending just 61 per cent on those things, so there is significant wiggle room.

Wenham is right to bring up the stadium, as annual matchday revenue is £126m and commercial revenue is £277m.

Their total revenue of £565m, per the latest accounts, would allow them to spend £480m per year on squad costs.
