Tottenham could get unexpected chance to re-sign Harry Kane thanks to Barcelona
Tottenham Hotspur could take advantage of a loophole that would allow them to bid for Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane.
Kane earned his superstar status during his time with Tottenham, as he scored a club-record 280 goals in 435 appearances.
The England international has been even more prolific in Germany with Bayern Munich.
With 61 goals in 51 games in all competitions last season, nobody in Europe's elite divisions scored more times than Kane.
He has just one year to run on his contract at Bayern, however, and there is now the odd murmur that he could be on his way out.
Amid interest from Barcelona, there could be an unexpected opportunity for Spurs to themselves pounce.
Daniel Levy has already confirmed Harry Kane clause
There was always an inevitability about Kane leaving the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
So that proved in August 2023 when he waved goodbye after two decades on Spurs' books.
Spurs fans have always held out hope he will one day return, though, with Alan Shearer's Premier League goalscoring record in his sights.
Daniel Levy confirmed prior to his exit as chairman last year that Tottenham have a buy-back clause in Kane's agreement with Bayern.
It means that if any team bids for the prolific attacker, Spurs will get a chance to match or better that offer.
It was reported by Sky Sports on Monday that Barcelona are interested in signing Kane this summer.
The Catalan giants are working out how best to fund a move for England's newly crowned record World Cup goalscorer.
If they do get together the funds to lodge a bid, it means the door will open for Spurs to table their own bid.
Why Kane to Tottenham return is no longer so fanciful
Kane is the best striker in world football right now.
Realistically, there is only a very slim chance he will be be back in N17 in the next couple of years - if at all.
But Spurs are spending big this summer and that could turn Kane's head.
Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes could arrive at Tottenham, with that double deal alone a statement of intent.
Kane will surely be back in the Premier League one day in order to chase down Shearer's long-standing record.
Spurs need to ensure they position themselves to be front of the queue when that does happen, whether it be this summer or - more likely - a year or two from now.
