Mathys Tel transfer ‘still alive’ despite Tottenham rejection bombshell – Merson
Mathys Tel will revisit a move to Tottenham if he cannot secure a different move away from Bayern Munich, Paul Merson has predicted.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the young Frenchman has rejected a move to Hotspur Way after Daniel Levy jetted out to Munich after Spurs agreed a £50million deal with the Bundesliga giants [Le Parisien].
The 19-year-old has attracted plenty of interest from around Europe, with Ange Postecoglou’s side looking like they had won the race, and Merson believes a transfer to London is still alive.
Speaking via Sky Sports News [31 January, 6:05pm], Merson said: “Tel will be back for Spurs if he doesn’t get another club. He can’t go to Spurs now. Fans won’t be happy with that.
“As soon as they’ve heard that he doesn’t want to join, and those three other clubs don’t come in for him and then he ends up at Tottenham, the fans won’t be happy with that.”
Mathys Tel transfer still on the cards for Tottenham?
A last-gasp move to the Premier League would not be the most baffling news story ever, though it is no wonder why Tel has rejected the move when looking at Spurs’ position in the league table.
The Lilywhites are still competing the Europa League, FA Cup and EFL Cup, but with Postecoglou’s side languishing in 15th, few supporters will blame him for looking elsewhere.
Spurs were clearly keen to get a move over the line, though, and if the player were to return after not being able to find an alternative destination, it is tough to see the club turning him down.

The most baffling transfer news, or lack thereof, is the number of defenders being linked with a move to Hotspur Way – basically zero.
AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori has emerged as a potential signing in recent hours [Gianluca Di Marzio], but with Postecoglou calling out for defensive reinforcements for weeks, it is quite odd that no centre-back has been signed.
