Cristian Romero agrees Tottenham exit in huge bombshell, long-term contract ready

Tottenham look set to lose Cristian Romero in the summer transfer window.

The 27-year-old is trying to help Ange Postecoglou‘s side reach the Europa League final and secure a first trophy in 17 years.

However, his future has constantly been under speculation, and he recently admitted that he would love to play in La Liga.

Spurs are braced for a difficult summer, and it could be made worse after a new update about the Argentine’s future in North London.

Romero agrees terms with Athletico Madrid

Romero has looked likely to leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in recent weeks, and a new development may seal his exit.

A report from Sebastian Vidal (6 May) claims that the defender has agreed to join Atletico Madrid, with a five-year contract being readied.

It states that Spurs are seeking a fee of £50million, while the Spaniards will only offer a maximum of £34m to seal a deal.

Tottenham cannot rely on Romero

Romero is widely considered one of the best centre-backs in the game when he is fit, but he is not available nearly enough.

The World Cup winner has featured just 18 times in the Premier League this season as injury issues have hampered his campaign.

The upcoming summer represents Daniel Levy‘s best chance to sell the former Atalanta defender for a significant fee, given that he is unhappy in N17 and would likely not agree to a new deal.

His current contract expires in 2027, but the longer it goes on, the less value that the Lilywhites will receive for his services.

Given his injury record this season, Spurs should allow him to leave while his valuation is still high before it starts to tank.

They have the likes of Micky van de Ven, Kevin Danso, Radu Dragusin and Ben Davies already in their ranks, with young Croatian defender Luka Vuskovic, who is currently out of loan also being very highly-rated.

Selling Romero and bringing in a cheaper replacement that is a similar quality, such as AC Milan star Fikayo Tomori, may prove to be the best move for the Londoners, as it would allow them to reinvest more in other areas of the squad.
