John Wenham doesn't believe Tottenham will look to sign Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose believes the 22-year-old will want to sign for a club where he is guaranteed first-team minutes.

As reported by Tutto Sport (26 June), Spurs are keeping an eye on Calafiori.

However, as reported by Fabrizio Romano via X (4 July), Arsenal have agreed personal terms with the Italy international and will now look to reach an agreement with Bologna.

And Wenham - speaking exclusively to Tottenham News - doesn't see Spurs trying to hijack the move, despite their interest.

“This is a very exciting defender we’re talking about,” Wenham said.

“However, plenty of clubs will be chasing his signature, such as Arsenal.

“In addition, we already have plenty of top defenders. Calafiori will want to go to a club where he is a guaranteed starter.

“Therefore, I just can’t see us signing another defender of that level. He won’t want to come and battle with three other top players in his position.”

Tottenham set to miss out on Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori

It looks as if Arsenal are going to win the race for the highly-rated young defender.

That will come as a bitter pill for Spurs to swallow, especially considering their intense rivalry with the Gunners.

However, the blow will be softened by the quality of defenders they already have at the club, including the likes of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven.

Furthermore, Radu Dragusin has also made an impression while in action at the 2024 UEFA European Championship.

As a result, Spurs might be happy to let this transfer go.
