Ange Postecoglou talks prove key as Tottenham seal brand-new transfer
Mason Melia held meetings with Ange Postecoglou before deciding to sign for Tottenham Hotspur, according to the Irish Examiner.
The Irish outlet reported on 4 February that the 17-year-old St. Patrick’s Athletic winger, signed for a League of Ireland-record transfer fee of £1.6million, has had numerous meetings with Spurs officials.
Melia and his uncle have frequently travelled to Spurs’ Enfield training centre in recent months, as well as speaking with Postecoglou and Lilywhites legend Ledley King before undergoing a medical on Tuesday.
Spurs’ interest in Melia is long-running, and with King and Postecoglou playing key roles in his switch to North London, the Republic of Ireland Under-19s international will formally arrive once he turns 18.
Ange Postecoglou proving a key player in Tottenham transfers
Postecoglou’s influence on swaying in-demand wingers towards Spurs is becoming somewhat prolific, given his conversations with Mathys Tel were also key to the Bayern Munich winger’s transfer u-turn.
Melia’s signature – while hardly as high-profile as the likes of Tel – adds further polish to Tottenham’s late splurge in the transfer market, which also saw the arrival of Austrian international Kevin Danso.

Antonin Kinsky’s arrival early in the window, accompanied by a centre-back and two wingers with sky-high potential, means that despite pressure rising for Postecoglou, their business has been productive.
Although Melia won’t be available to feature in North London for almost 12 months – he turns 18 in January 2026 – it’s yet another sign that Spurs are assembling one hell of a team for the future.
It remains to be seen how much of that future Postecoglou will still be in post to see, but given his importance to the negotiations for both Tel and Melia, the Australian’s influence can’t be underestimated.
