Ange Postecoglou role revealed as Tottenham close in on Mathys Tel transfer
Ange Postecoglou spoke with Mathys Tel “at length” and convinced the Bayern Munich forward to sign for Tottenham, according to Julien Laurens.
The French journalist posted on X (3 February) to report that with Tel on his way to North London having made a u-turn on the transfer, talks with Postecoglou on Monday have played a key role in his decision.
Postecoglou holding lengthy discussions with Tel have brought the 19-year-old around to signing for the Lilywhites, and he’s now decided to leave Bayern Munich on loan after rejecting Daniel Levy last week [Fabrizio Romano, 31 January].
Laurens said: “Ange Postecoglou spoke with Mathys Tel at length earlier today and convinced him to come to Tottenham.
“Huge role played by the Spurs manager to get one of the most coveted youngsters in Europe!”
Ange Postecoglou pivotal in Mathys Tel Tottenham decision
If ever there was a sign that players come to Spurs in order to play under Postecoglou, Tel’s Deadline Day u-turn is surely it, coming just days after Levy wasted a personal trip to Germany and spoke with him.
Having agreed a deal with Bayern, consisting of a loan with no option to buy, personal talks between the Spurs owner and Tel got nowhere, and that seemed to be the nail in the coffin for the transfer.

Postecoglou stepping into the fray to speak with Tel personally – something which is often left to a director of football in the modern game – has instead shown just how important the Australian still is.
The 59-year-old has come under increasing pressure this term following his side’s lacklustre run of Premier League form and subsequent slide down the table, but now comes a chance for redemption.
With Kevin Danso already through the doors, Tel to follow and key men set to return in the coming weeks, Spurs’ faith in Postecoglou could prove to be what makes the difference in turning their season around.
