Tottenham push ahead to seal Conor Gallagher transfer – Here’s what Thomas Frank has said
Tottenham are looking to strengthen their midfield in January, and Atletico Madrid’s Conor Gallagher could make his way to North London.
Joe Lewis has made funds available for Thomas Frank to spend in the winter market, despite the Lilywhites’ poor performances of late.
Spurs lost 2-1 to Aston Villa at home in the FA Cup’s third round on Saturday, which only added to the doubts surrounding Frank’s future at N17.
But the Lewis family may feel the only way to judge the 52-year-old fairly is if he lands his admired transfer targets in the coming weeks.
Gallagher appears to be someone whom Frank has thought highly of for a long time.
Tottenham step up their pursuit of Conor Gallagher after Aston Villa make a move
Gallagher enjoyed playing an important role for Atletico Madrid last season after joining the Spanish side in a permanent deal from Chelsea in the summer of 2024.
However, the 25-year-old is struggling for minutes under Diego Simeone this campaign, and may seek crucial game time elsewhere with the World Cup looming.
Spurs have been tracking Gallagher and may make a move in the coming days.
- Gallagher has played 19 games for Atletico Madrid in La Liga this season
- He has started in just four of these matches
- Gallagher picked up 10 goal contributions in all competitions last season for Atletico Madrid
According to Matt Maltby on X, Spurs are stepping up their pursuit of signing Gallagher in the January window.
The Lilywhites have been monitoring the Englishman; however have now decided to ramp up their efforts to bring the former Chelsea man to N17 this month after Aston Villa declared their interest.
Villa are looking to sign Gallagher permanently, as Tottenham may need to match or better the Villans’ offer.
Lewis may have to dip deep into his pockets to sign the former England international, as Frank has already made his admiration of Gallagher clear.
Thomas Frank has admired Gallagher for years
Gallagher could bring a different skillset to Spurs’ midfield, and is someone who can do both sides of the game well.
He has proven through time with Crystal Palace, West Brom, and Chelsea that he is more than capable of performing to a high standard in the Premier League.

The Spurs boss has publicly praised Gallagher in the past, naming him alongside Chelsea players he described as “high quality”.
Frank said in 2023, as quoted by Brentford‘s official website: “Chelsea look really promising. The players they have are of very high quality.
“In the midfield, [Moises] Caicedo and Enzo [Fernandez] are two fantastic players. And don’t forget [Conor] Gallagher is a Chelsea player who is doing very, very well.”
Time will tell, but Gallagher appears to be a potential signing that makes total sense for the Lilywhites.
