Tottenham lock in Mathys Tel exit call as sympathy shared from inside Spurs
Mathys Tel’s Tottenham future looks increasingly shaky.
Tel has enjoyed some excellent moments in a Tottenham shirt since first joining the Lilywhites in the winter of 2025, but those have been few and far between.
Having started just six Premier League games so far this season, Tel has appeared frustrated with his situation for a number of months now.
His gametime has increased in the first few weeks of 2026, as before Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Tuesday night, Tel had started the last four games in all competitions.
Tel couldn’t feature against Dortmund as Thomas Frank decided not to include him in his Champions League squad, replacing him with one of the goalscorers on Tuesday, Dominic Solanke.

Mathys Tel set for further Tottenham frustration
Despite that, Tel is reportedly ready to quit Tottenham this month in order to seek a larger role for a different club.
Still only 20-years old, the France youth international is still very much in the infancy of his senior career, and has plenty of time on his side.
However, after playing over 80 times for Bayern Munich prior to his Tottenham move, the versatile forward has got the taste for playing regular football, and he won’t want to give that up.
The upcoming World Cup this summer also has to be playing into his thinking, as although he’s yet to represent France at senior international level, a big second half of this season could see him break into the squad in time.

Therefore, it’s understandable that he’s far from pleased with his current situation at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, especially given the struggles endured on the pitch under Frank this term.
However, as detailed in a report from Sky Sports, he may not be afforded the opportunity to improve his predicament this season.
It’s stated that Tel is indeed unhappy regarding his lack of minutes, and Spurs are aware of how he’s feeling and are “sympathetic” towards him.
But Tottenham are reported to not be budging from their stance, and as such, Tel won’t be allowed to seek a transfer away from N17 this month despite interest in his services from across Europe.
Frank is said to have wanted to include Tel in his Champions League squad, but axing him was the only way that he could include Solanke.
