Tottenham have just set Rodrigo Bentancur asking price after Jose Mourinho submits bid

Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur could sign for Fernerbache before the summer window closes.

Bentancur’s future was thought to be linked to Cristian Romero whom he is close at Tottenham. But the picture could be more blurry than initially believed.

Thomas Frank seems to rate Bentancur highly if pre-season is a metric to go by. The defensive midfielder appeared in four of the six friendlies, starting in each of them.

However, it seems he could be edging towards a departure before 1 September.

Tottenham set £21.5m price tag on Bentancur

Bentancur showed his class during Spurs’ narrow defeat to PSG in the UEFA Super Cup final.

The Uruguayan started alongside Joao Palhinha, who Tottenham signed from Bayern Munich on loan for the season. The two held strong for the majority of the game before their work was undone during the final 10 minutes.

His consistent playing time has suggested that he is part of Frank’s plans next season. But with one year left on his contract and an extension yet to be announced, he could be close to a departure.

As reported by Sabah (Page 17, 18 August), Fenerbahce sent a £12.9million offer to Tottenham for Bentancur.

It is understood that Spurs want around £21.5m for the midfielder, who is an important part of their midfield core. An agreement has yet to be reached, but negotiations are continuing with Jose Mourinho’s side.

This could be a welcome development for Yves Bissouma, who is expected to leave Tottenham before the window closes. But with Archie Gray and Palhinha as the main defensive midfield options, Frank could be tempted to keep Bissouma as another option.

Is £21.5m too low for Bentancur?

Bentancur has had his injury problems. Notably, an ACL tear during the 2022/23 season saw him sidelined for 36 games.

But injuries seem to be a thing of the past. The Uruguayan missed just four games for Spurs last season and six during the 2023/24 season.

At 28 years old and at the height of his prime, £21.5m seems like a low asking price for him. Bentancur has arguably been one of Spurs’ most important players in recent seasons and dominated Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League final.

Therefore, at least £35m would be an acceptable price for the European winner.
