Tottenham have agreement in place to sign Johnny Cardoso in £20.8m update
Tottenham are looking to strengthen their midfield in the summer transfer window.
Ange Postecoglou’s side has struggled massively this term and one of the factors that has affected the team’s performance is the lack of squad depth in certain areas. While the attack has wafer-thin squad depth, the midfield isn’t in any better condition either.
Given the uncertain future of Yves Bissouma, the depth in central midfield could stretch further if Spurs do not sign a midfielder in the summer.
There are a lot of options for Spurs to consider in the summer but they also have a preference for signing a certain midfielder from La Liga.

Tottenham’s preference over Real Betis midfielder
The North London club sold Giovani Lo Celso to Real Betis last summer and as part of the deal, Spurs agreed a preferential option to sign defensive midfielder Johnny Cardoso.
According to the Spanish newspaper AS, Betis are open to a big sale this summer and are hoping to generate a huge profit on the sale of Cardoso.
The report adds that Betis would be happy to see Tottenham exercise their £20.8million preferential buy option, which would generate a significant profit on £5million Betis paid to bring Cardoso from Internacional.

The 23-year-old is emerging as one of the best young midfielders in Spain and has played a key role in Betis’ push for a top-six finish in La Liga. Los Verdiblancos manager Manuel Pellegrini admires Cardoso’s qualities as the US international can break opposition play, link up well in the midfield and also provide support in the attack by storming the opposition box.
While Pellegrini may not welcome the sale of one of his crucial midfielders, the club hierarchy are open to cashing in on him and are banking on the £20.8million bid from Spurs to arrive.

Bissouma is likely to leave Tottenham as clubs like Crystal Palace and Aston Villa consider signing the Mali international. He will enter the final 12 months of his deal this summer and given his inconsistent performances, Postecoglou will not mind cashing in on him.
To replace the former Brighton man, Cardoso seems to be an ideal candidate. The 23-year-old is capable of playing in the central midfield as well as a holding midfielder.
He is adept at intercepting and breaking up opposition play and also possesses decent passing skills, making him a reliable option to have in the squad.
