Tottenham goalkeeper in contract talks as transfer exit decision made

Daniel Levy is looking to provide Thomas Frank with a core group of players at Tottenham.

Frank has had just over three full weeks in his new post to assess his squad, although the majority of players are only just filtering back to Hotspur Way after their summer breaks.

The Dane is expected to conduct a sizeable overhaul of the overinflated Spurs squad, and must first select which players he sees as surplus to requirements in North London.

Frank already has an extensive shopping list for Levy, but the goalkeeping position is not one of the areas the 53-year-old is expected to strengthen in this window following recent developments.

Josh Keeley is in talks to extend his contract

One of many Tottenham youngsters returning to N17 after a loan spell is Josh Keeley, who spent last season at Leyton Orient alongside Jamie Donley.

The Republic of Ireland shot-stopper had a stellar campaign with the O’s, which earned him their Young Player of the Year award as he helped the club reach the League One playoff finals.

Keeley also scooped up Leyton Orient’s Goal of the Season award after scoring an unlikely and dramatic 99th-minute equaliser against Oldham Athletic in the FA Cup in November, a tie which Orient went on to win 2-1.

As reported by Football London (7 July), the 22-year-old is in ongoing talks with Tottenham over a new contract ahead of another potential loan move this summer.

Keeley has already seen a host of League One and Championship sides show interest in his services, with Spurs very open for the goalkeeper to gain more senior experience.

Keeley to compete with Brandon Austin

Keeley’s development has been highly encouraging, but he is not expected to challenge Guglielmo Vicario’s position as the first-choice goalkeeper at Spurs.

The Italian is not immune to errors, especially from long balls and corners, but his shot-stopping is exceptional, and the 28-year-old is quickly emerging as a leader in the dressing room.

Antonín Kinský is expected to stay as his direct understudy after signing for the Lilywhites in January for over £12million and playing in 16 games last season.

This leaves Brandon Austin as the third-choice goalkeeper. The academy graduate signed a new contract with Spurs in May last year, but at 26 years old, having only made three senior appearances for Spurs, his position is the least assured and is expected to be challenged by Keeley.
