Tottenham ‘find Gibbs-White alternative’ as new Premier League midfielder lined up
Tottenham are determined not to allow the Morgan Gibbs-White situation to derail their summer.
Spurs looked set to sign Gibbs-White after triggering the England international’s release clause, but have been met with stiff resistance from his parent club.
Nottingham Forest are determined to block the move and are willing to explore legal measures to ensure they hold on to their star player.
Tottenham still believe that the deal will eventually go through. However, they are conscious of the delay the saga has already caused and are determined not to let the situation halt their progress in the window.

Tottenham are interested in Wolves midfielder João Gomes
Thomas Frank is still looking to shore up the middle of the park, especially with Yves Bissouma looking likely to leave.
The Mali international has one year left on his contract, as does his UEFA Europa League final midfield partner Rodrigo Bentancur.
As such, Tottenham could explore a move for Wolves midfielder João Gomes, a player they have a strong interest in, as per Ben Jacobs via the Last Word On Spurs Podcast (17 July).
Season | Appearances | Goals | Assists | Minutes Played |
2024/25 | 40 | 4 | 2 | 3,305′ |
2023/24 | 38 | 2 | 1 | 2,865′ |
The Brazilian midfielder, who opened his account for Wolves by scoring a brace against the Lilywhites in February 2024, has become a stalwart for the West Midlands side.
He predominantly plays as a number eight, but his versatile skillset allows him to play as either an attacking or defensive midfielder when required.
Gomes would not come cheap, as the 24-year-old has five years left on his contract after signing an extension in April, but he would be an excellent alternative to Gibbs-White, and possibly even more suited to Tottenham’s current needs.

Frank needs to fix the Tottenham midfield this summer
Frank’s priority this window has been to sign goalscoring forwards, which will help Spurs break down stubborn defences, something they have struggled to do in recent seasons.
However, it’s the midfield where Frank’s most significant problems lie. The Dane will have seen from afar that the midfield was easily bypassed in transition, offering far too little defensive cover.
Spurs also struggled to maintain control against opponents well-versed in pressing, and while Frank has high hopes for Archie Gray, it is the area that Spurs fans are most keen to address this summer.
Signing Gomes would be a step forward, but Tottenham would probably still need to sign a specialised defensive midfielder to feel confident that they will not suffer the same issues next season.
