Son Heung-min exit: Barcelona twist emerges amid big Tottenham news
Barcelona were interested in signing Son Heung-min on a free transfer from Tottenham, according to The Telegraph.
The newspaper reported via their website on 7 January that European giants, including Barcelona, were looking at signing the attacker on a free transfer at the end of the season.
However, that is no longer an option as Spurs have triggered a one-year contract extension, securing his services until 2026.
Tottenham fend off Barcelona with Son Heung-min contract extension
At 32, Son is slowly edging closer to the end of his career. However, he is still one of the best players at Tottenham, having bagged seven goals and six assists in 23 appearances across all competitions this season.
With the South Korea international also the club captain now, it was imperative that the North London giants held on to his services for the time being and avoided losing him for free.
They have managed to do exactly that by triggering a clause to extend his contract by another year.
Tottenham have, therefore, bought themselves some time to decide on Son’s long-term future and their plans to subsequently replace him.
The former Hoffenheim attacker has missed six games through injury this season and it is evident that he is unlikely to play every single game for Ange Postecoglou’s side going forward.

Daniel Levy will, thus, be aware of the need to replace Son at some point in the future.
It is worth noting that Spurs are actively pursuing a deal to sign Randal Kolo Muani from Paris Saint-Germain this month [The Athletic].
Although the Frenchman is primarily a centre-forward, he is also comfortable operating across the front three and would take some pressure off Son.
In other Tottenham news, a transfer for this Serie A star is already ready.
