Juventus now dream of signing ex-Tottenham star who said he was ‘unhappy’ under Ange Postecoglou
Thomas Frank is yet to prove he’s Tottenham’s answer after Ange Postecoglou.
Tottenham hierarchy are set to stick by Frank for the time being, despite yet another disappointing night at the office on Saturday, as Aston Villa beat Spurs 2-1 to knock the Lilywhites out of the FA Cup.
Frank has been accused of ‘double standards’ among Tottenham players, and looks to be in danger of losing the dressing room.
Numerous Tottenham players are out in the cold under Frank, with one of those in Mathys Tel being tipped to leave Spurs this month to source more regular playing time elsewhere.
Juventus target dream signing of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg
Tel must be feeling frustrated with his lack of opportunities under Frank, with the 20-year-old forward starting just five Premier League games so far this season, culminating in 465 minutes of league football.
That disappointment is how former Tottenham stalwart Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg revealed he’d felt under Ange Postecoglou at Spurs, before he left for Marseille in the summer of 2024.
In a March 2024 interview with Tipsbladet, Hojbjerg said: “Of course I am unhappy with what is happening at the club. It is no secret, but it is not something I am making a fuss about either.
“I can rest my head on the pillow knowing that I am giving what I have to to show the coach (Ange) that he should believe in me. That is not the case at the moment, and it is the coach who must explain why.”
Now, in a report from Foot Mercato on Monday, it’s been claimed that Juventus are dreaming of signing Hojbjerg, but Marseille don’t appear interested in selling the 30-year-old.
However, it’s reported that the Dane is questioning his long-term future with the French giants, and could be open to a move to Turin.
Should Tottenham seek Hojbjerg reunion this month?
Hojbjerg enjoyed an excellent four years with Tottenham, and by the time he left, had solidified his status as a true Spurs cult hero.
As such, there will undoubtedly be many Lilywhites supporters wondering whether a dramatic return to N17 this month could be on the cards, but should it be?
On a permanent deal, probably not. Fan-feeling towards Hojbjerg aside, he left Tottenham due to frustrations over his diminished role in the team, and with Joao Palhinha, Xavi Simons, Yves Bissouma, Lucas Bergvall, Pape Sarr and Archie Gray all for company in the middle of the park, he would face some stiff competition for playing time once again.
Plus beyond this season, Spurs will get the likes of James Maddison and Rodrigo Bentancur back from injury, and that would only make Hojbjerg’s task to retain a key role in the team considerably more difficult.
- Hojbjerg made 184 appearances for Tottenham
- He scored 10 goals
- The Dane started just eight Premier League games in his final 2023-24 season with Spurs
However, given the fact both of those two stars – Maddison definitely – won’t see the field again this season, then should Hojbjerg be open to it, a short-term loan deal until the end of the season could make an awful lot of sense.
It would re-energise the fanbase, provide Frank with a real leader both on the pitch and in the dressing room, and take the pressure off some of those other aforementioned young midfielders.
