Jose Mourinho’s ‘incredible’ admission about Andy Robertson relived as Tottenham hunt deal for Liverpool star

Andy Robertson could make a stunning move to Tottenham in the winter transfer window.

Tottenham have just signed Brazilian left-back Souza, although he’s viewed as a player for the future.

Robertson was approached by Atletico Madrid last summer, and with just six months left on his deal, Spurs have now joined the race to sign him.

Tottenham are now interested in signing Robertson before the transfer deadline on 2 February, and negotiations have begun between both parties.

A move as a free agent in the summer looks more likely, but Spurs will be delighted if they can capture the services of a left-back Jose Mourinho once raved about.

Jose Mourinho was once blown away by Andy Robertson

Ben Davies’ season-ending injury has left Spurs light on left-backs in the first-team squad, and Robertson would undoubtedly improve the side.

Prior to his 17-month spell at Spurs, which lasted between November 2019 and April 2021, Mourinho managed both Chelsea and Man United in England.

In December 2018, Mourinho, who was the Man United manager at the time, was full of superlatives for Robertson’s performance during Liverpool’s 3-1 win over the Red Devils.

After the match, he said: “I am still tired just looking at Robertson. He makes 100 metre sprints per minute, absolutely incredible, and these are qualities.”

Since moving to Anfield from Hull City in 2017, he has been the best left-back in England by a country mile.

The Scotland international’s deliveries from wide positions have caused havoc for the opposition, and Tottenham could really do with an attacking threat from the left-hand side.

The 31-year-old is slowly falling down the pecking order at Liverpool due to the arrival of summer signing Milos Kerkez, which makes a deal with Spurs a likely possibility.

Although he has only started four times in the top flight this season, Robertson still has the qualities Spurs need in a full-back.

Destiny Udogie is completely finished at Tottenham

The Liverpool man is vastly experienced and is someone who can be counted on throughout the course of a season.

Destiny Udogie’s poor injury record shows that he is the complete opposite of reliable, having featured just 16 times in all competitions for the Lilywhites this season.

After a sensational first season in 2023-24, fitness issues and poor form have left him far from his best, and there is speculation that the 23-year-old could leave Spurs in the summer.

Udogie looks finished at Tottenham, and there seems to be no way back for him under Thomas Frank.

If Robertson were to come during the winter window, or even the summer, the Italian’s career in N17 would realistically be over.
