Jorges Mendes involved as Tottenham make final defender transfer call

Tottenham are not in the race for Lens centre-back Abdukodir Khusanov in the winter transfer window, according to The Athletic.

David Ornstein revealed on 7 January that Spurs have been deterred from making a move for the 20-year-old due to the French outfit’s demands.

Lens want more than £33million for the Uzbek defender, and the North London club are not expected to compete for his signature.

Superagent Jorge Mendes is working to bring the best deal to the Ligue 1 side after being told to sanction Khusanov’s sale.

Ange Postecoglou has a defensive crisis on his hands as Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Ben Davies sit on the sidelines.

The Australian manager has been without his first-choice centre-back pairing for a while now and has had to rely on a makeshift defence.

Radu Dragusin and Archie Gray have been paired together, but Spurs’ defensive fragilities have become evident.

Tottenham have failed to win any of their last four Premier League fixtures, getting battered 6-3 by Liverpool during that period.

The Lilywhites will face the Reds once again on Wednesday (8 January) in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.

It remains to be seen who Postecoglou will rely on at the back, with Djed Spence replacing Dragusin in the centre of defence as Tottenham lost 2-1 to Newcastle on Saturday (4 January).

Spurs are in immediate need of a centre-back, and Daniel Levy will need to put his hands in his pockets to provide reinforcements in the coming weeks.
